On December 29, 2003, Officer Adrian Aurs was involved in a vehicle pursuit of a suspect involved in a disturbance in Indianapolis. The suspect fled from his vehicle and preceded his escape attempt on foot. Aurs continue the pursuit on foot through the streets and yards of neighboring homes. Officer Aurs was able to come in contact with the criminal while he was attempting to climb a fence by grabbing the criminal’s leg and pulling him down from the fence which resulted in a physical altercation with the suspect. The suspect, realizing that he is losing the battle, fired two shots at officer Aurs at point blank range with a Beretta, .40 caliber, semi- automatic handgun into his chest. Officer Aurs was luckily wearing the Interceptor Body armor jacket and was protected from the deadly fire. After being shot by the suspect, Officer Aurs returned fire as the suspect was attempting to flee by climbing on top of a carport. The suspect was seriously injured during the altercation and was later pronounced dead on the scene.
