Jan. 17, 2009 - PRLog -- The most viewed post this week at Ezega.com was entitled “Ethiopia’s Hottest Jobs”. The story discussed sectors that registered the most new job ads during the last six months. Ezega.com has been monitoring vacancy ads in its database and found that some sectors did much better than others. Sectors that had the most new jobs posted include Information Technology and Engineering.

Roughly 20% of all jobs posted at Ezega.com were engineering jobs. In this category, Civil Engineering took the lion’s share of new jobs, distantly followed by Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.  Accounting and Finance jobs accounted for about 14% of all jobs posted at Ezega.com. Accounting jobs were the single largest group in this category, followed by Finance, Auditing and the like. Information Technology jobs accounted for about 10% of all jobs posted at Ezega.com. Software Engineers and Networking professionals seem to be in equal demand in this category, followed by the rest of Computer Engineering jobs.

Another story that received attention was the end of hunger strike by a leading Ethiopian opposition politician, Birtukan Mideksa, who was imprisoned for life last month after a dispute with the government. The leader of Ethiopia's Unity for Democracy and Justice Party called off the hunger strike she began on December 29, when she was arrested and placed in solitary confinement in Addis Ababa's Kaliti prison. Birtukan's mother Almaz Gebregziabher told VOA her daughter had eaten the soup and Ethiopian bread (injera) she had brought to the prison Saturday and Sunday.

In an interview at her home, Almaz said Birtukan told her she had decided to fight the court 's move to revoke the pardon she received in 2007 - nearly two years after she and dozens of other opposition politicians were arrested in the wake of Ethiopia's disputed 2005 election, and convicted of treason. They had been given life terms, but then pardoned after signing a document effectively admitting their guilt and apologizing.

Also in the news was Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) report naming Eritrea as one of countries through which weapons were being smuggled into Gaza to be used against Israel. "This is a complicated smuggling system that involves many different people around the world," one official reportedly told an Israeli local paper. According to the report, Israel’s security agency says it has learned that the Grad-model Katyushas were routed through Yemen, Eritrea, then moved to Sudan, and north to Egypt, and finally smuggled into Gaza. Eritrea on its part reacted fiercely to the report calling it a smear campaign by a “CIA agent”.
