Zeomatrix announced a grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop a new technology product which will be used to separate value-added products such as chemicals and fuels from woody biomass. The 6-month project, entitled “Highly Ordered Membranes for Molecular Separation,”
is based on a patent-pending clean technology invented by Zeomatrix principals Dr. Karl Bishop and Tyler Kirkmann.
The NSF award to Zeomatrix is in the amount of $99,161. It is funded through the NSF Small Business Innovative Research Program (SBIR), a competitive grant program which aids small businesses in their early stage research and development efforts. Zeomatrix is using this award to develop a new method for manufacturing membranes for use in chemical separation in biomass.
"Zeomatrix is excited to receive this award which supports our ongoing product development." stated Dr. Susan MacKay, President of Zeomatrix. "The ability to separate chemicals in biomass is becoming increasingly critical as the world reduces its reliance on fossil fuels. The membrane is designed to separate and concentrate high value, specialty chemicals from a renewable resource, and is produced using a novel technology not currently on the market today.”
Located at the Target Technology Center in Orono, Maine, Zeomatrix is commercializing several Clean Technology products. The company's focus is on developing technologies for a cleaner environment, including products for water purification, remediation of air pollution, and odor control at sanitary landfills and composting facilities.
About the AwardThis project is supported by Award Number 0839498 from the National Science Foundation. It is a Small Business Phase I award. About Zeomatrix:
Our mission at Zeomatrix is to provide our customers with green products, engineered for a cleaner environment. Our products are designed to remove odors and toxins from the air and water using zeolite. Zeolites are naturally occurring, safe-to-handle, non-toxic powders. They are used in clean tech products from selective reductive catalysts, to filtration products for air and water.
Zeomatrix engineers and manufactures specialty zeolite products for clean technology markets. Zeomatrix is a niche player, focusing on high value-added products. A core product is a patent-pending technology called ZeoBLOC
TM which is a paper-based product with odor control properties specifically designed to remove toxic odor-causing compounds from the air at solid waste and compost facilities. Additionally, Zeomatrix has filed a patent for a novel nanofiltration membrane. For more information please visit our company's website at:
