WORLDwrite, the East London based education charity with an uncompromising commitment to global equality is hosting a unique gala night which promises to put paid to contemporary ideas of ‘limits’ in more ways than one. The gala will present a male ballet dancer en pointe, in exaggerated female make up and a film demanding flushing loos for Africa.
WORLDwrite’s Director Ceri Dingle said today:
“The two key features of this exceptional night may seem incongruous, for WORLDwrite they are entirely complimentary. Ian’s astonishing ballet provides a hilarious yet inspirational moment to reflect on ways we can surpass what society tells us is the ‘natural order’ of things. Eritrean refugee Tiba, at the heart of the film Flush it refuses to accept hand pumps and pit latrines will do for the developing world. In these recession ridden times refusing to accept limits on what we can be, do and have is more important than ever. This sentiment is at the heart of WORLDwrite’s work.”
Ian Archer-Watters, the renowned comedic ballet dancer is flying in from New York to perform his stunning piece, The Swan. Ian performs en pointe, complete with black feathered tutu, diamond crown and jewel adorned lashes longer than his nose. The Swan based on the classical ‘Dying swan’ in this instance refuses to die and the piece, defying gender based conceptions of the ballerina shows us it is possible to be whatever you wish to be.
The performance will be filmed for a documentary about this extraordinary dancer and for the young volunteer run news channel WORLDbytes. Ian will be accompanied by cellist Gabriella Swallow and pianist Anne Marshall, both celebrated musicians.
To follow this rare opportunity WORLDwrite will be screening its latest documentary Flush It, to give it the East End premiere it deserves. Flush it tells the watery but never wet story of one Eritrean refugee’s dream to have top end sanitation and loos in the villages she grew up in. The film’s compelling narrative is completed by expert testimony on all the possibilities we have to overcome water shortages everywhere in the world. This special performance and screening will take place at the Rich Mix Cultural Foundation, 35 - 47 Bethnal Green Road, London, E1 6LA on Tuesday 20th January 7:30pm.
