Jay Goldberg's book, "How to Get Keep and Be Well Paid in a Job - the Unofficial Workplace Handbook" was published in April of 2008 by Outskirts Press. Mr. Goldberg has arranged for a deeply discounted price on his book, for PTAs, economic development nonprofit corporations, youth at risk programs, nonprofits that help non-English speaking individuals learn English and get work, and other nonprofit corporations to help those organizations raise funds. In addition to making his book available at a discounted price, Mr. Goldberg will provide marketing materials, and fund-raising strategies.
For example, "How to Get, Keep and Be Well Paid in a Job" is an excellent book for high school students as they start to enter the workplace. However, even though the book is an enjoyable and fun read, it is not a book they would buy for themselves. So a PTA fund raiser, targeting the parents of these high school students would raise funds for the organization while getting an excellent, needed, lifetime reference book in the hands of their children. Keep in mind, while schools teach reading, writing, mathematics and science; they do not teach how workplaces operate and how to be successful at work.
However, "How to Get, Keep and Be Well Paid in a Job" is not just for individuals entering the workforce for the first time. The book received a 5-star review from Midwest Book Review, an entity that recommends books for libraries. The review stated: "The cost of living becomes higher and higher by the year; getting a well-paying job is essential just to survive. "How to Get, Keep, and Be Well Paid in a Job" is a guide for prospective employees to succeed at their searches for a good job, not to mention tips on the easiest way to keep a plum career - by excelling at it. With an examination of how workplaces function and how the reader can make himself or herself a vital cog in the corporate machine, "How to Get, Keep, and Be Well Paid in a Job" is highly recommended for community library career collections."
The author, Jay Goldberg developed a work readiness training program in 2002. At a meeting in Jacksonville, FL on 1/14/03, Rick Spill of the National Skills Standard Board said that the program developed by Mr. Goldberg was the best work readiness certification program in the country, and that many of the other work readiness programs cause more harm than do good.
One of the reasons that Mr. Goldberg's Work Readiness Training Programs are so successful is his philosophical approach to workplace training. He believes the goals of workplace training are to change attitudes and modify behaviors, not to just impart knowledge where test questions are answered correctly but the participants don't follow through with their knowledge at work.
That is one reason why "How to Get, Keep and Be Well Paid in a Job" is different than any other job skills/work readiness/workplace training book in the marketplace. The book's goals are also to modify behavior and change attitudes. This is accomplished by not only teaching knowledge, but by explaining why specific behaviors and skills are valued by employers. In addition, real life analogies and examples are used to help illustrate the key points in the book. For example, the interview process is compared to a first date, advanced workplace skills are compared to special codes in video games, and downloading music from free file-sharing sites is looked at ethically before discussing ethics in the workplace.
