Jan. 15, 2009 - PRLog -- Leading vehicle tracking providers CMS SupaTrak are urging fleet managers to maintain their  fleet vehicles properly and keep them safe despite rising costs in  vehicle maintenance charges.
A recent article released by  Fleet News indicated that ‘in the last three years the number of unsafe  lorries taken off the roads has increased by 27%’ leaving fleet  managers with deflated resources. The study by The Vehicle and Operator  Services Agency (VOSA) also found ‘that 35% more prohibitions have been  served on vehicle operators over the same period as a result of  drivers’ hours exceeding legal limits’.1
With new legislation  placing more responsibility on fleet managers with relation to employee  safety, and increased pressure from both a local and national level for  reduced carbon emissions, fleet managers now have a responsibility to  ensure that all their vehicles are kept in good working condition.
Poorly  maintained vehicles are known to produce higher toxic emissions and use  more fuel so by ensuring all vehicles are regularly serviced so managers  can meet environmental pressures and save money. But what does all this  have to do with vehicle tracking?
The  simple fact is that vehicle tracking devices are much more  sophisticated than they used to be and can now be used to monitor  various elements within a vehicle. GPS tracking can, for example, be  used to monitor driver behaviour allowing managers to highlight problem  areas. In turn this enables office based staff to identify how much  wear and tear the vehicle is likely to receive.
In simple  terms the wear and tear of a vehicle driven by a driver who is known to  be ‘heavy on the brakes’ is likely to need its brakes servicing much  sooner than a vehicle that is operated by quieter driver, thus vehicle  tracking devices are proving to be an indispensable tool for monitoring  these behaviours.
Vehicle tracking  suppliers CMS SupaTrak also commented on how devices such as their premier GPS  tracking solution, SupaTrak can be used to monitor how long the vehicle is in use allowing them to remain  in compliance with the Working Time Directive.
Jason  Airey, Managing Director of CMS SupaTrak comments; “Utilising a vehicle  tracking system such as SupaTrak enables managers to monitor where,  when and how their vehicles are driven. This real time tracking feature  thus allows them to keep detailed reports on when their vehicles should  be due a service and that any wear and tear is dealt with efficiently.”
