There are 5 key things to look for in an energy efficient window they are as follows”
Energy Star Rating- Energy Star Windows will have a sticker on the window. They will also have:
· U-Factor which measures the rate of heat transfer through a window; the lower the U-Factor the better a window is at keeping the heat in. (good for winter months)
· SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient)
2. Multiple Paned- Most vinyl windows use double or triple-paned glass units. These units create an insulation barrier of air, which provides protection from damaging elements, higher energy-efficiency and greater sound protection.
3. Low-E Coating- Low-E Coating on windows basically keeps the hot side- hot, and the cold side- cold. These microscopic layers prevent heat and ultraviolet rays from passing through the window.
4. Wood Composite, Vinyl or Fiberglass Frame- High quality windows are fusion-welded at the corners to form a structurally sound frame. The frames themselves are strong, watertight and airtight. Vinyl frames never need sealing or painting, they are extremely durable and will withstand fading and discoloration much better than wood frames.
5. Argon or Krypton Gas Filled- Manufacturers have introduced the use of argon and krypton gas fills, with measurable improvement in thermal performance. Argon is inexpensive, nontoxic, non-reactive, clear, and odorless. The optimal spacing for an argon-filled unit is the same as for air, about 1/2 inch (11-13 mm). Krypton has better thermal performance, but is more expensive to produce. Krypton is particularly useful when the space between glazings must be thinner than normally desired, for example, 1/4 inch (6 mm). The optimum gap width for krypton is 3/8" (9mm). A mixture of krypton and argon gases is also used as a compromise between thermal performance and cost.
