At a time where the majority of news is doom and gloom, Walker based engineering company Houghton International continue to bring hope to the North East by defying the odds and landing a series of highly profitable export orders into new markets.
Over the past year, they have experienced success with orders from Greece, the Czech Republic, Pakistan, Cayman Islands, Barbados and the USA, with new export markets accounting for 9% of total sales.
Emma Pattison, Marketing Executive, who joined the company in July 2008 and is in the process of setting up their first ever Marketing Department has stated:
“We are committed to promoting the business and seeking new markets. Our new Website is having instant success throughout the world. Within one month of the site going live, our new USA customer found us via a Google search. This one order alone has repaid the time and money we have invested into the Website.”
“The first half of 2009 will be an extremely busy time for us in terms of gaining extra share of the UK markets we operate in and concentrating on further export success.”
Managing Director, Michael Mitten, said the slide of the pound was "like a breath of fresh air for exporters”.
“Our USA contract win is a significant achievement. This is a major victory for us which has been a long time coming as we have not had an order from the USA since 2001.”
“Our team has been working tirelessly to achieve quality and service levels never before seen in our industry. The pound dropping against the other major currencies has been the catalyst we needed to turn genuine prospects into firm orders.”
Overall, the company are on target to achieve record profits, with sales for the year ending 31st January 2009 predicted to be over £3m – up from £2.5m in 2007.
