Pasadena Children’s Charity Goes Green in New Year with Help

Jan. 12, 2009 - PRLog -- (PASADENA, CA)— The New Year offers new beginnings and opportunities to set certain goals. For Hillsides, a foster care children’s charity serving Los Angeles County including Pasadena, going green to help cut costs and reallocate funds to provide additional services is one New Year’s Resolution. With help from Steel Casey, a second-hand industrial office supply store in Studio City, the children’s charity received recycled metallic lateral file cabinets to maintain order with style.
   The refinished files came with locks, keys and hanging file racks and in the chosen color requested: paradise blue. A donation valued at $5,000, Steel Casey offers businesses and charities opportunities to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
   “I love them. We don’t get things for the business office very often so the file cabinets give us more capacity, safety and ease with which to work,” said John Sterner, the charity’s chief financial officer.
   The Paradise Blue color adds to the high standards of the business office, Sterner said smiling. “It’s a huge improvement over what we had.”
   John Hitchcock, the foster care charity’s executive director said, “We are looking for ways to cut down on waste and curb expenses without sacrificing the quality of our programs. Donations like these from Steel Casey help us meet our business goals while creating safe places for our children.”
   Gerri Monohan, the charity’s director of operations, has been working with employees, encouraging them to also cut down on expenses that add up such as minimizing the use of paper products, turning off lights, and recycling.
   “Just think of all the trees we are saving,” Monohan said.
   To guide the charity’s employees, Monohan kindly reminds them that they can do a few more things to help.
   “When leaving your office for a meeting or at night, remember to turn off your lights and computers. Getting a drink? Use a ceramic or plastic cup.”
   An added bonus to encouraging employees to set the example is giving a life lesson to the children living at the foster care charity—the importance of living in a healthier and safer environment.
