Sans Soucie Art Glass Studios, Inc., a Palm Desert-based company specializing in etched, carved, and leaded architectural art glass, recently completed two projects demonstrating the Coachella Valley’s business capabilities on the national stage. In June 2008, over 4000 square feet of glass, custom carved by the firm, was installed in the lobby ceiling in the new Bank of America tower in New York City. Shortly after the completion of this project, they began work on a carved glass representation of the presidential seal for the new aircraft carrier, The USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77).
Now the second tallest building in New York City, the Bank of America Tower is one of the most environmentally friendly and technologically progressive buildings in the world. Sans Soucie was selected for this project from among elite glass companies in Los Angeles, Europe, and Canada.
To reflect the "green" theme of the project, an intricate "crystallized tree bark" texture was selected as the sandblasted, hand carved design on a special low iron, crystal clear, Starphire® glass. The 359 large pieces of carved glass created by Sans Soucie has been installed in the main lobby as one of the first places visitors will see when walking into this spectacular structure. The primary piece is a large glass cube suspended above the front desk, accompanied by a glass sub-lobby ceiling and elevator wall accents. Their second recent national project, is on board the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77). The carrier is the 10th and final Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. This revolutionary ship with its numerous improvements and modernizations will pave the way to a new class of carriers. Sans Soucie carved the U.S. Presidential Seal on a glass panel on display at the entrance into the Tribute Room on board the carrier, where photographs and biographical information about former President Bush are arrayed to honor the namesake of the ship. The presidential seal is hand-carved in three dimensions on a piece of Starphire® clear glass. This impressive design is finished with the signature of the 41st President, George H.W. Bush and is illuminated by LED edge lighting to give it an authoritative presence.
