Eco-Savvy Consumers Switch to Swapping
Environmentally considerate consumers are making the switch to swap this Christmas, with record numbers of new members and swap activity reported on OurSwaps, the website that allows users to swap anything online.
Highlighting an increasing shift towards sustainable lifestyle habits, swapping is gaining traction as a way to enjoy the thrill of shopping without the associated impact on the environment, and our wallets. The act of swapping promotes reusing and recycling, with a nod to the age old adage ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’. A worthwhile activity when you consider that 60% of rubbish thrown away today could be recycled, while 9 out of 10 people say that they would recycle more frequently if it was made easier .
Says Barry Harding, the brains, and technical developer, behind OurSwaps: “what we’ve created with OurSwaps is a platform that gives people the freedom and control to swap anything they want. This empowers them to make their own choices; for environmental or economic purposes, or the simple pleasure of swapping. It’s simple- and that’s why it works so well.”
Launched in Australia in June 2008, OurSwaps combines the thrill of shopping with the buzz of bagging a bargain; letting users swap and ‘barter’ in any way they choose. Users are able to put their products and services up for swap, which they can then swap outright, or they can go on to negotiate deals with prospective ‘swappers’
Actively promoting environmental awareness, OurSwaps.com encourages swapping as a viable alternative to shopping. And there’s never been a better time to make the switch, as the festive season is the ideal time to stick to the tradition of giving; to loved ones as well as the environment.
