So where do indie artisans sell their handmade creations online? According to a recent survey, Etsy’s the hands-down preference of indie artisans. Forty-four percent of respondents to an AmericanCraftGuide.com (ACG) survey gave Etsy the thumbs up when it comes to selling their creative goods online. Survey participants favored their own sites next, followed by ArtFire, ShopHandMade, eBay, and MadeItMyself. Other selling sites receiving write-in votes included artisanstreet, DaWanda, and SilkFair, among others.
Etsy, which launched in June 2005, claims a membership of 1.6 million with more than 200,000 sellers. The site has been featured on such shows as Good Morning America, The Today Show, Rachel Ray, and Martha Stewart. Stewart admits to using Etsy to find guest crafters for her show, by the way. Print coverage is extensive, as well, and includes such mainstream luminaries as Forbes, Business Week, and the Wall Street Journal.
Following are the survey results:
Q: Where do you sell online?
Etsy - 44%
My own site - 21%
ArtFire - 10%
ShopHandMade - 4%
eBay - 4%
MadeItMyself - 3%
Other - 14%
Note: This survey ran on AmericanCraftGuide.com (ACG) during December 2008. ACG is not affiliated with the sites mentioned in the poll.
