Hoffman Estates, IL – On December 19th 2008 the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act went into effect. The law is named after former Secretary of State James Baker’s granddaughter who drowned after being sucked down to a spa drain in 2002. This federal law requires all commercial pools and swim clubs to have new American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved drain covers and Safety Vacuum Release Systems (SVRS) installed in order to prevent bodily injury and/or death. This law is regulated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission as well as state and local swimming pool inspectors. Pool operators face a maximum fine of $1.8 million and pool closure for non-compliance with the act.
