Visitors headed for destinations along the south Pacific coast from San Jose and other central valley places either head to the central Pacific coast and then down a bumpy 40-km stretch from Manuel Antonio to Dominical, or over a mountainous inland road through Cartago and San Isidro; both options take about 4.5 hours.
With the 40 kilometers between Manuel Antonio and Dominical paved, travel time between the two tourist magnets is expected to shrink from an hour to 20 minutes, making it extremely inviting for tourists to venture south to experience a wilder and greener part of Costa Rica.
Dominical, once a sleepy fishing village is today a highly acclaimed international surf spots. In recent years more and more intrepid travelers from USA and Canada have come to explore its dramatic coastline and invested in real estate which invariably offers majestic ocean views and pristine rainforests all in one.
The south coast also serves as a jump-off point for Corcovado National Park in the Osa peninsula, named by National Geographic as the most biologically diverse spot on earth.
After suffering many years of delay, work on the Costanera highway has at long last resumed in mid 2008, surprising many skeptics who have long ago given up on the hope that being connected to Manuel Antonio and Jaco Beach further north would secure the south coast region’s economic growth.
“This time it’s for real…we have seen road construction works intensify over the past few months… we are optimistic that it will be paved before next Christmas” Elaine remarks.
