Nashville, TN  – Consumers feeling a financial pinch at the grocery store can cut their food costs by up to 50% per week by learning a few simple techniques, according to a new book by a Nashville author.

“The majority of consumers today pay full retail for their groceries, simply because of their mindset,” according to author Randall Putala. “These people will drive 5 miles out of their way to save a few pennies on gasoline, but they almost pride themselves in paying the absolute highest prices for groceries,” he said.

In his new book, “Better Groceries for Less Cash” the author explains his 101 secrets to lowering your cost of food – all while improving the quality and quantity of food you get for your money.  The three main secrets, according to Putala, are:
1.   Change the way you think of food, and the reasons you select the items to put in your cart.
2.   Select ‘core ingredients’ rather than pre-assembled meals.
3.   Take advantage of coupon multipliers and in-store specials such as ‘buy-one / get-one-free.’

“Many people think that if they use coupons at the grocery store, their neighbors will think they are destitute,” said Putala.  “The truth is that the food manufacturers and suppliers actually want you to use their coupons.  Their goal is to get you to try their very best items, so hopefully you will purchase them again and again in the future,” he said.  According to the book, the net result of using grocery store coupons is that you can often enjoy better quality products for less than the generic brands.

The tips and techniques found in the book are not limited to clipping coupons, however.  The book explains a wide array of steps that shoppers can take to harness seasonal discounts and multiply their savings by taking advantage of the manufacturer’s promotional cycles.

“If you think like a marketer, you can beat the grocery sales system in multiple ways,’ according to Putala.

Additionally, the book describes how to re-think your food preparation recipes, processes and even your kitchen appliance selection. “People today are almost brainwashed to think that cooking is difficult and time-consuming,” said Putala.  “We are conditioned to believe that we must select the frozen, pre-packaged meals due to our personal time constraints,” he said.

In the book, the author describes multiple ways to rethink the food selection and preparation process.  The result, according to the author, is that consumers can learn to prepare fresh, tasty and nutritious meals in a fraction of the time that is required with conventional cooking.  This can lead to better health as well as more satisfying meals, according to the book.
