In her new featured article, Elizabeth O’Keeffe discusses the potentially transformative power of fusing together the ideas of compliance and quality.  As she states in Compliance and Quality Together: Excellence, Superiority, and Market Differentiation: “If we do not agree that certain compliance initiatives are not premised upon quality — the notion of excellence, the best use, the best practice, and superior — then perhaps the target for change is not at the implementation stage of compliance but rather the underlying assumptions themselves.”

A few of the key points of Ms. O’Keeffe’s article are:
•   The definition, and thereby the perception, of compliance can be restrictive and imposing.
•   Being forced to make demands or to coerce human behavior is a less than ideal outcome for compliance professionals.
•   A positive shift in compliance thinking must take place before the implementation phase and be focused on the ideals of quality.


Elizabeth O’Keeffe became Senior Counsel to the consulting division at PAREXEL International on September 12, 2008. Ms. O’Keeffe is a member of the Massachusetts, Connecticut, and North Carolina Bars, and was an honors graduate (Magna Cum Laude) of Case Western Reserve University School of Law where she concentrated her studies in health care law. She is active in her professional community as a member of the American Bar Association’s Health Law Section and the Boston Bar Association’s Health Law Section.
