Dec. 22, 2008 - PRLog -- Surprising Number of Search Engine Users Don't Know How They Function

A recent survey of Britain's Internet users is just in and the results that it has garnered regarding search engine user awareness were quite surprising. What it found was that the vast majority of British Internet users have either a skewed concept or no knowledge at all of how online search engine results are determined (via links and linkbuilding).

Another surprising fact that was found was that a full 38% of British search engine users completely ignored additional sponsored links, favoring instead to focus exclusively on their main search engine results. Also, while a full 97% of British Internet users admit to using search engines, only 29% of them knew that it was SEO efforts by the website owners that determined positioning in the search engines.

On an expanded note: 24% of the survey respondents believed that website owners had virtually no possible way of influencing search engine positioning, while 22% of them felt that there was some payment system involved. Meaning website owners who paid the most money to the search engine operator, received the most preferential treatment in a decision making process. As website owners know, premium SEO rankings can be gained from solid linkbuilding campaigns utilizing methods like directory submission and article submission.

There were some low percentage numbers in this survey and the lowest one of all, 5%, went to those who felt that search engine positioning was a completely random affair. The next lowest percentage number, 19%, went to those who readily admitted to not having the slightest idea of how search engine positioning was determined.

Of course age and sex also play a part in deciding who is going to be the most search engine savvy, with 33% of men compared to 26% of women surveyed being able to correctly state how search engine positioning was determined. Also, 7% in the 16-24 age bracket and 30% in the over 50 age bracket had absolutely no clue as to how how search engines functioned.

So what does this all mean for website owners and SEO business operators? It turns out that there is a lot of study material to be gleaned from this survey and some conclusions are less subtle than others. Take for instance, the finding that 33% of the respondents to this survey felt for some as of yet undetermined reason, that additional sponsored listings that appeared with their search engine results were less reputable or reliable.

Note: Oddly enough, what area of England that a person lives in also also played a part in determining the level of trust that one placed in the overall integrity of additional sponsored listings, with residents of central and eastern sectors of the island being the least trusting.
