This spring, young women from every corner of the state between the ages of 13 and 18 (Teen) and 9 to 12 (Junior Teen) will convene in Wichita for a different kind of pageant. Says Executive Director Kimberly McDowell, “ The pageant is a celebration of today’s youth. You will see contestants of all heights, weights, races, nationalities and backgrounds participating in Miss Teen and Junior Teen Kansas World Pageant.” The judging categories consist of swimsuit, evening gown, interview, and beauty/poise. For Junior Teens, casual wear replaces swimsuit. Contestants in the Miss Teen and Junior Teen Kansas World pageant are active in their school and community.
Over $30,000 in college scholarships and prizes will be awarded at the inaugural Miss Teen and Junior Teen Kansas World Pageant. The new Miss Teen Kansas World will win a prize package valued at over $10,000, including competition wardrobe when she goes to compete at the national Miss Teen United Sates World pageant held in Houston in July, 2009. The winner of the Miss Junior Teen Kansas World pageant will win a prize package valued at over $5,000, including travel to Houston to support her pageant big sister!. What is different from this pageant says McDowell is that it is not a winner take all event. In the optional academic achievement competition, the winner wins a $10,000 scholarship and the first and second runners up win college scholarships of $6,000, $4,000 respectively. Additionally, the remaining top 10 who enter the academic achievement competition receive a $2,000 scholarship (all scholarships courtesy of Newman University; www.newmanu.edu)
