Cyber Monday: Reality Check for Business?

Build It, Improve It or Lose It, Says Computer Expert

Medford, N.J. -- While most business statistics recently point downward, Cyber Monday provides a burst of good news for those savvy enough to prepare for an increased era of digital shopping and sales.

While Black Friday sales climbed only 1 percent from 2007, online sales on Cyber Monday (the Monday after Thanksgiving) rose 15 percent, according to comScore, a market research firm that measures activity on the Internet.

"'Someone once said if you don't have a Web site, you don't exist.' Cyber Monday has proven that just a Web site is no longer enough," says Anthony Mongeluzo, president of Pro Computer Service and a winner of numerous entrepreneurial awards. "Either you have a Web site that encourages people to buy or you lose them to the competition."

Mongeluzo points to the online retail mall Rubylane.com that started to plan in early 2008 for this holiday season. "Our Cyber Monday orders were up 50% over 2007 figures, says Ruby Lane founder and President/CEO Tom Johnson.

According to Johnson, early planning and improvement to its Web site help spur sales.

"If you sell anything, you can almost always sell it online," Mongeluzo says. "If you don't have a Web site, every day without one is costing you money. If you have a Web site and sales or leads are slow, you're doing something wrong."

You can improve your online sales process almost immediately by having faster servers, improved search function, an easy-to-use wizard for shipping costs, and a clear, comprehensive help section.

While most business people think of retailing as the place with most of the action course for digital sales, Mongeluzo says maintaining your b2b Web site is just as important. "Every b2b company should maximize their site for more sales or leads," says Mongeluzo. "If you're not getting the maximum return from your Web site, either in sales or leads, you're doing something dreadfully wrong. Find an expert that can create a site that actually brings in a return because that's the way to conduct commerce in this digital age."

Pro Computer Service (www.procomputerservice.com) has offices in New Jersey and Delaware.
