The Perak Government in Malaysia has recommended small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the state to adopt technology-oriented methods in order to sustain their business amid the recent crisis. A State Industry Development and Information Committee official suggested that adoption and upgradation of technology will help small enterprises to improve their productivity and enhance their business prospects. SMEs account for 98% of the total manufacturing segment in Perak. They contribute significantly to the state’s economic growth and hence, measures need to be implemented to assist these small entities in coping with the recent crisis, suggested committee officials.
Technology adoption is imperative for small units, but it is observed that high cost for the same discourages small businesses to do so. Thus, industry officials are looking at ways to offer cost-effective technology solutions for small enterprises. Affordability, usability and suitability are the three key issues to be addressed for encouraging small companies to be more technology-oriented.
Committee officials pointed out that the state government is already taking measures to develop the Shared Services and Outsourcing (SSO) sector. It is also taking initiatives to offer different courses on software for SMEs.
