While science has not yet created a Laser that is quite as universally capable of healing the body as those wielded by Spock and Kirk, progress is being made in that direction. Anyone with a television knows that lasers are now used for cutting folks open during surgery and making delicate incisions in the eye to dramatically improve sight. But a laser technology that has been used in medicine for over 20 years is now being honed for substantially more uses.
Cold Laser, also know as Light Therapy and PRK was used to reshape the eye long before Lasik. It is still the preferred method for many patients, as it is far less invasive. Cold laser has also been shown to restore hair. Some of the earliest experiments with this type of laser produced healing and hair restoration to damaged skin surfaces.
Now the FDA has approved cold laser for use in the treatment of some soft tissue damage repair such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Dr. Michael Campbell is a Santa Monica Chiropractor who has witness almost miraculous results using cold laser with his patients: "First and foremost we are using cold laser as a supplement to existing methods, and finding that we can speed up the healing and improve the overall results almost every time."
Cold Laser gets its name for the rather obvious reason that it gives off no heat. The curative process works by the light energy itself reaching from 1 1/2" to 3" under the skin to stimulate healing of damaged cells. While the way this works is not fully understood, it is believed that the increased energy applied to those cells signals the body to either increase, decrease, or accelerate natural healing mechanisms such as wound healing, inflammation, or pain management.
A quick search on Google results in 1000's of articles and studies regarding the use of cold laser for sprains, back and neck pain, old knee injuries, repetitive motion issues, and more recently the common cold. Dr. Campbell has seen improvements in symptoms for the common cold, "The very same reasons cold laser works on muscle tissue gave us expectations that it would work on irritated linings of the mucus membrane. It goes right back to those early experiments that showed faster healing of skin tissue."
On a personal level, Dr. Campbell explains how he has used chiropractic approaches to eliminate the need for surgery. I experienced a surfing accident years ago which normally would have resulted in surgery. Through various chiropractic methods supplemented by cold laser, I never had to go under the knife."
