Packt is looking for authors with clear writing skills and strong technical expertise. Authors are rewarded with a royalty and an advance. For many authors, supporting the community by providing a book is a strong additional incentive. Most of Packt’s authors are full time IT professionals, who fit writing into their evenings and weekends.
Packt has become known among open source enthusiasts as one of the main Open Source publishers. Packt’s Open Source books include titles on CMSs such as Joomla!, Drupal, Alfresco, and Plone, as well as developer languages and tools including jQuery, Ext JS, Python, and PHP. Their editors continue to look for authors on these and other Open Source topics.
To further support Open Source, Packt pays a “project royalty” to every open source project covered in a Packt book. To date, Packt has paid over $100,000 to projects. Packt also organizes an annual Open Source CMS award with a first prize of $10,000.
For many authors, writing their first book is a frightening prospect. Packt works closely with authors to help them write effectively, work efficiently to a time line, and deliver high quality material.
