Drasties decided to take this drastic action after Muthathar Al Zaidi was arrested during the farewell visit of president Bush to Baghdad. The journalist was taken in because he threw both his shoes at Bush when the American president was ready to start with his last pressconference as a president in Baghdad. President Bush avoided the projectiles very agile. Later the president explained to Iraqi journalists that something like this was not unusual in a democracy. "So what. The guy threw a shoe at me. He wants attention. Something like that happens in free society." That of course must be the reason why the president of the United States showed himself so skillful in avoiding the shoes at his press conference. Experience!
Drasties start een schoeneninzameling voor de Iraakse journalist Muthathar al Zaidi wiens schoeisel in beslag is genomen door het repressieve Iraakse bewind. Het hoeven geen nieuwe te zijn. Alles is welkom. De schoenen zullen op kosten van Drasties naar de Abu Graib gevangenis in Bagdad worden verscheept waar Al Zaidi is opgesloten. Wij hopen met deze solidariteitsactie te bereiken dat onze collega in de toekomst over de middelen beschikt om zijn vak naar behoren uit te oefenen.

Drasties besloot tot actie over te gaan nadat de journalist Muthathar al Zaidi werd gearresteerd tijdens het afscheidsbezoek van president Bush aan Bagdad. Al Zaidi moest het ontgelden omdat hij zijn schoenen naar president Bush smeet toen die aan zijn laatste persconferentie in Bagdad als president wilde beginnen. President Bush ontweek de beide projectielen overigens uiterst behendig. Later legde de president aan Iraakse journalisten uit dat zo iets heel gebruikelijk is in een democratie. "Zo wat? Een vent gooide een schoen naar mij. Hij wilde aandacht trekken. Zoiets gebeurt nu eenmaal in een vrije samenleving."
Vandaar natuurlijk dat Bush zich zo handig toonde in het ontwijken van naar de hem gegooide schoenen op de persconferentie. Ervaring!
De Iraakse journalist is afgevoerd naar Abu Graib waar hem het vuur na aan de schenen zal worden gelegd.
