NEW YORK—Entrapping is the perfect word to describe the pixilated precision found in painter Anthony John Gray’s latest collection, the “eyecon” series. Anthony is known for his geometric surrealism and abstract spiritual logic. This collection is drawn from Anthony’s perspective of world icons and culture, and this time the paint has got a little edgy with the debut of the work titled “Mr. Smiley meets Sexy Rexy.”
This stimulating pixilated geometric oil involves what appears to be a Wal-Mart smile, strategically placed between the open legs of a pixilated figure of a nude woman; as if she is sitting seductively on the smile. Another perfectly placed “Wal-Mart smile” also appears pixilated as the woman’s face. She is stunning, with hands on her knees, the intentional trim of lacey thigh highs seen through the pixeled squares of dark paint, feet arched, and looking directly at the viewer, waiting, topless, and at peace.
Although the oil has a very sexy appeal, it is also highly respected for his architectural element and the use of pixilation.

In 1987, Anthony was made honorary citizen of Palm Springs for his artistic achievement. He designed the reverse side of one of five commemorative medals for the Palm Springs Golden Anniversary along with Yaccov Agam, Leroy Neimann, R.C.Gorman and Olaf Weighorst. - This is an especially significant accomplishment considering Gray’s first profession was a police officer with the Sussex Constabulary stationed at East Grinstead and he is a self-taught artist. He has also worked on large installation projects for companies such as the Institute of Nutritional Sciences in San Diego and the I.R.T Corporation in California.
Harkrider Fine Arts has had a relationship with the artist for over twenty years.
