In all there are 7 messes catering to the students and is the source of livelihood for the workforce about 175 who draw their inspiration from the quote “Dedication is not what others expect of you, it is what you can give to others”.
Pilani will remember 10 December 2008 for two reasons. One is due to the fact that it happens to be the 60 th anniversary of World Human Rights Day which is celebrated every year in honor of United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation in 1948 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the theme for this year is Dignity and justice for all.
The other reason is that it happens to be the day when the mess workers of BITS Pilani presented a cultural progrmme to an audience which included senior officers of the Institute and student representatives.
The programme took off with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the Chief Guest for the occasion Dr LK Maheshwari Vice Chancellor BITS Pilani followed by invocation dedicated to Goddess Sarswati. The cultural programme included a Rajasthani Folk Dance, Bhajan, Garhwali Folk Dance and a Rajasthan Dhamal. The solo song Hamen Tum Se Pyaar Kitanaa, Ye Ham Nahiin Jaanate
Magar Jii Nahiin Sakate Tumhaare Binaa sung by one of the mess workers was truly soul stirring. Each item presented by the mess workers received louder and louder applauses from the audience and became the loudest when the prizes were distributed for the cricket tournament which had been recently conducted.
For the students of BITS Pilani, the mess workers are an integral part of their learning process at Pilani and the heart of every Proud to be BITSian at the time of graduation sings the song O Saathi Re Tere Bina Bhi Kya Jeena to the mess workers.
The alumni of the Institute carry the memories of the mess workers life long and one batch of alumni (75-80) rallied resources for group insurance of the mess workers. When alumni reach Pilani for the Silver Jubilee Reunion, they make it a point to eat in the mess and spend time with the mess workers. The mess workers of the Institute are indeed an inseparable part of Brand BITS Pilani.
