India Banao! Launches a petition under the Right to Information Act
Questions for the Home Minister on the progress made in investigations on various terror attacks in India this year
December 5th 2008, New Delhi, Mumbai and the World Wide Web: India Banao!, an independent movement dedicated to increasing awareness about public affairs among India's youth, announced today that it has started gathering public support for a petition that seeks information on the progress the government has made in investigations of various terror attacks against India in the year 2008. The petition under the Right to Information Act will be submitted to the Home Ministry and is only related to information that should be publicly available (and will not hinder investigations in any way).
Last week's Mumbai terror attack was shocking. It deliberately attacked some of our best known social institutions including two reputed hotels and CST station. It was a well-coordinated attack that caught our Intelligence Services and Government utterly off guard. The death toll in the attack has reached over 160, including 15 foreign nationals. However, this is no isolated event. This year alone has seen at least a dozen major attacks which have resulted in at least 518 deaths including citizens and law enforcement personnel.
While the citizens of India have shown tremendous resilience and maintained communal harmony, we believe the government and law enforcement agencies have not taken definitive and concrete measures against the perpetrators of these crimes against humanity. India Banao! has launched a petition under the Right to Information Act of 2005 seeking facts and information from the home minister on progress made in investigation and rehabilitation related to the 13 terror attacks that India faced in the year 2008. This petition can be accessed and supported by visiting http://www.indiabanao.org.
We request all citizens and especially young citizens to support this petition and to seek more accountability from our politicians.
About India Banao!
India Banao! is a platform for young people to participate in public affairs. India is a young country with millions of ambitious, hard-working youth seeking a better tomorrow. However, many young people believe that neither India's political system nor its leaders are addressing the issues that really matter to them. The India Banao! initiative provides a channel for young people to engage with India's political leaders on youth-related issues.
India Banao! has three primary goals:
* Provide opportunities for young people to participate in public life
* Engage India's political leaders to address the key issues facing young people today
* Raise general awareness on youth-related issues such as higher education reform, employment generation, and safer cities.
India Banao! welcomes young people from all communities and social groups. We expect all participants to be respectful, cordial, and considerate in their interactions. For more information please visit www.indiabanao.org.
