Dec 01, 2008 – Ian Ballon, a shareholder in the Silicon Valley and Los Angeles offices of the international law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, recently authored The Complete CAN-SPAM Act Practice Guide.
Published by Thomson West, The Complete CAN-SPAM Act Practice Guide provides an in-depth analysis and explanation of the CAN-SPAM Act, implementing regulations and respective case law. The guide also includes analysis of relevant state laws and features the Federal Trade Commission's 2008 regulations and interpretive guidelines.
Ballon served as lead counsel to MySpace, Inc. in MySpace Inc. v. Sanford Wallace resulting in an award of more than $223 million, one of the largest damages award ever granted under the CAN-SPAM Act. Ballon’ s extensive subject knowledge comes from representing technology, media, and entertainment companies in complex litigation and counseling relating to copyright, trademark, trade secret, database, and computer and Internet law issues.
Ballon also has authored E-Commerce and Internet Law: Treatise With Forms and serves on the editorial boards of The Cyberspace Lawyer, The Journal of Internet Law, Privacy and Information Law Report, E-Commerce Law Report and Intellectual Property Lawcast.
This year, Ballon was appointed to the board of advisors of Stanford Law School's Program in Law, Science and Technology. Since 2003, he has also served as Executive Director of Stanford Law School’s Center for E-Commerce, which organizes the law school’s annual E-Commerce Best Practices Program, the leading program in the country focusing on best Internet practices.
Honored as one of the top 100 lawyers in California in 2008 by the Daily Journal, Ballon also has been named one of the top new media lawyers in the United States by CyberEsq. magazine, one of the 100 most influential lawyers in California by California Law Business, one of the top 50 IP Litigators in California and one of the top 25 copyright, trademark and patent lawyers in California by the Daily Journal.
