NJ Diet and Fitness Expert Offers Simple Tips To Avoid Holiday Over-Eating

Renowned diet and lifestyle coach, Edward Albert, says eating slower and drinking more water during your meal can help save hundreds of calories.

Nov. 26, 2008 - PRLog -- The only thing stuffed on Thanksgiving should be the Turkey.  But unfortunately, too many Americans over-eat not only on Thanksgiving, but on a daily basis.  The holidays seem to increase the likeliness of over eating.

As much as we are looking forward to Thanksgiving, many of us are equally dreading the holiday.  Why do people over-eat on Thanksgiving?  Because everything looks and tastes so good!!!

Edward Albert, Owner and Director of Personal Training for Ultimate Fitness Center in New Jersey offers these simple tips to avoid becoming a stuffed turkey on Thanksgiving:

1.  When taking additional helpings, ask yourself, is it your stomach that wants more food or your mouth?  99% of the time it’s the stomach.  Drink a glass of water, wait 20 seconds and see if you still really need those extra helpings
2. For your first plate, take whatever you want to eat, but take ½ the amount you normally would.
3. Eat slowly, not in slow motion, but slowly.  Take part in the conversation, and drink plenty of water.  Before you think of going up for seconds, wait at least 15 minutes.
4. If you must take additional helpings, this time, take only the healthy stuff (you got to eat whatever you wanted the first time, remember!).  Pick salad, veggies, etc.
5. Dessert…you can have dessert.  First, drink a glass of water. Then choose your dessert and again, take ½ the amount you would normally take.

It takes the brain approximately 20 minutes to receive a signal that the stomach is ‘full’.  This is why over-eating is so dangerous; we don't get the message until it is way too late.  Then we feel disgusted and angry with ourselves.  Albert says, “Be true to yourself this Thanksgiving.  Remember, everything does not have to be eaten at once. It's not brain science, it's simple.  Eat small portions and eat slowly, giving your body time to signal to your brain that you are full, before you help yourself to additional portions.”
