Plasmon UDO migration, replacement, or alternative!

Phantom Data Systems announces tool that enables Plasmon customers to easily convert their large MO and UDO optical libraries to industry standard Blu-Ray media.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov 25, 2008 -
It is very tragic that Plasmon has had to suspend business, however, if you have a UDO or MO system from Plasmon and are wondering how to move forward, Phantom Data Systems is here to help. Whether you have a direct attach library or a Plasmon Archive Appliance, Phantom Data Systems has a go forward strategy for you.

For a product with the same functionality as the Plasmon Archive Appliance, Phantom Data Systems recommends DISC GmbH's library solutions with Blu-ray technology. The Blu-ray technology is certified for a 50-year media life. Phantom Data Systems DISC Blu-ray library systems provide more capacity in a smaller from factor and a smaller CO2 footprint then the Plasmon Archive Appliance, and it's less costly. We can also help to move data to other storage options, including but not limited to tape.

"Unfortunately Plasmon was unable to sustain business in this tough economy, however that does not mean solutions with viable optical storage technologies are not available", says Peter Frankowski President of DISC GmbH. "This partnership provides a strong solution that will replace the Plasmon system with a less expensive solution that uses less power and stores more data due to the utilization of Blu-ray technology. I am confident this solution is a long-term viable archive technology that will out live any proprietary technology including UDO."

“Unfortunately, vendors that do not realize the industry has undergone a metamorphosis into a collaboratively competitive environment only risk isolation. That’s what happened to Plasmon” said Alani Kuye, President of Phantom Data Systems Inc of Norwalk, Connecticut.

For customers with legacy data, Phantom Data Systems offers two solutions. First, the standard HSM software can manage a direct attached library and support both the UDF and Diamond file systems from Plasmon in addition to the new hardware you select, preventing the need to migrate data. For Plasmon Archive Appliance customers or customers wishing to migrate their data to newer storage technology, Phantom Data Systems will provide a tool, which will migrate data from your current system to the new Blu ray archive.

This new feature will allow customers to connect the migrator product to their existing Plasmon MO or UDO optical library as well as a new Blu-Ray optical library. Once the libraries are configured the customer can select the migration feature to automatically copy all their existing data over to industry standard UDF Blu-Ray format. They can select between disc-to-disc copy, many MO/UDO discs to one Blu-Ray disc, or they can have the MSM copy all the existing MO/UDO discs to one large volume.
