Representative Eddie Rodriguez of Austin filed HB 233, an act relating to the creation of an advisory committee to establish and recommend qualifications for translators and interpreters working in health care.
Recognizing the rapidly changing demographics of Texas; in which 30% of the population speaks a language other than English in the home, in which the Hispanic population has increased at twice the rate of other populations, and which has seen a rapidly growing Asian population, the Texas Association of Healthcare Interpreters and Translators strongly supports the efforts of Representative Eddie Rodriguez.
Multiple studies document the burden unqualified interpreters and untrained bilingual staff can add to an already strained healthcare system. Representative Eddie Rodriguez’ bill is the first step toward ensuring greater efficiencies and returns on investment for the Texas healthcare system and better health outcomes for the population it serves.
About the Texas Association of Healthcare Interpreters and Translators
The Texas Association of Healthcare Interpreters and Translators was formed to address the inconsistency in qualifications for professional interpreters in the state of Texas. TAHIT is working to achieve standard qualifications for healthcare interpreters to ensure accurate transmission of vital medical information and provision of excellent healthcare to all regardless of their ability to speak English.
