PRLog (Press Release) - Nov 21, 2008 -
Santorini - Four of Greece's best known natural wonders have been nominated for the New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign, a contemporary effort to create a list of seven natural wonders chosen by people through a global poll.

To date over 400 natural wonders have been nominated from more than 200 countries worldwide, but in the end only the top seven wonders, with the most votes, will be chosen.

The campaign is being organised by the Swiss-based New7Wonders Foundation, after its success in organising the New Seven Wonders of the World, which where chosen by more than 100 million votes in the first-ever global campaign.

Very few votes for Santorini the last period! Greek communities around the globe, from Canada to New Zealand, in the U.S., in Mexico, in Brazil and in other EU countries vote for Santorini! Even if Santorini is now on

135th position globally, is expecting a big amount of votes during December 2008".

Santorini or Thira (its official name), is arguably a top world travel destination today. The history of present-day Santorini took root in the explosive fury of the volcano on which the inhabitants of “Kallistè” (the Great Beauty, so called due to the natural beauty of the area) lived a peaceful and prosperous existence.

Around 1700 BC, the sleeping volcano came to life in an explosion of lava and pumice which rained down, depositing a thick layer on the island and destroying all life. The explosion also broke the original island up into a series of small islands and formed the caldera into which the sea water rushes. Santorini is the largest fragment. The island’s subsoil is made up of successive layers of basic slag, tufa and lava from time immemorial, and the soil itself is a mixture of pumice and volcanic ash.

Some three centuries after the explosion, man returned to the island, and learned to survive on this arid environment, whipped by wind and sand, where rainfall was scarce and the soil hardly conducive to growing. Over the centuries, the inhabitants learned to control these adverse elements and invented very special growing techniques adapted to the extreme conditions on the island.

A small piece of land that gave so much to the world civilization!
