Alick Garae, has been given an unexpected Blue Moon Opportunity, (one that will change a lot of lives), on the tiny tropical island archipelago of Vanuatu, in the South Pacific. As a local headmaster he feels honoured at being accepted into the Fulton College in Fiji to study for his Primary School Bachelor Degree. However, it appears that Alick may have to bypass this great opportunity, due to insufficient funds.
Alick, a gifted teacher, has educated the children of children of Port Vila at the Olwi school, for the past 22 years. He has seen the school increase to 150 pupils, with classrooms for kindergarten through to grade 6. Alick hopes to see the school develop further by adding grades 8 to 10 over the next few years.
Alick has also been instrumental in getting many of the local people to gain their teaching qualifications. His teachers continue to be trained by Alick, as time permits between teaching the pupils.
YouMe Support Foundation and Child Trust Fund offers non-repayable education grants to children who are unable to go to high school, through lack of funds. One of Alick's pupils has been chosen to be the first students to enter the program. Because education in Vanuatu Is not free, there are many children who are unable to go to high school, as the statistics show:
25% of children will never go to school
Only 55.8% will reach grade 6
Only 18.2% will continue on to high school.
Alick will be in a similar situation to many of his students if he is unable to raise the funds of $Fiji 4800 by January 2009, for his tuition at Fulton College.
As Fulton College has a special work program, it is able to keep the fees at a low rate. The work program involves every student enrolled in the college, giving 11 hours per week of manual labour around the college. This improves the student's skills in areas like farming, orchid work, librarian and general gardening and the experience is of practical use when the students return home.
If anyone is able to assist Alick fulfill his dream of continuing his own education so he can give better service to his own students, please contact Mark at the Daily Post on publisher@dailypost.com.vu or Dr Wendy on info@seachangelodge.com
