IIMSAM observed Universal Children's Day
Doha (November 20, 2008):  The Goodwill Ambassador of the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina against Malnutrition (IIMSAM), a Permanent Observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, Dr. Naseer Shahir Homoud today marked here the United Nations Universal Children's Day by highlighting IIMSAM's contribution for improving the welfare of children in various parts of the world.

The United Nations' (UN) Universal Children's Day, which was established in 1954, is celebrated on November 20 each year to promote international togetherness and awareness among children worldwide. UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, promotes and coordinates this special day, which also works towards improving children's welfare.

Speaking on the occasion, IIMSAM Goodwill Ambassador appealed to all Government, celebrities, NGOs and other organisations of the world to come forward with their active and sincere participations to implement UN objectives of solving children problems in all its types and manifestations.

He called upon all members of UN and its all agencies to come out with revised welfare plans for all children across the world with concrete mechanism to deal with all emergent crises pertaining to the children like child rights violation, poverty, hunger, malnutrition, immunization, global warming, epidemic, and food shortage, sexual abuses among others.

He said the Millennium Developments Goals (MDGs) of the United Nations are very unique and ground-breaking achievement by the international community to deal with stated problems.

Not only did all U.N. member states agree to the MDGs, but it was the first time countries large and small, rich and poor—with the United Nations as facilitator—identified focused, time-bound, measurable and mutually-reinforcing development goals as a framework and strategy for the improvement of the children condition, he added.

Dr. Naseer insisted on the support to the children of special needs and called upon the society to extend their unstoppable supports to ensure happiness to such Children and their parents. Focusing on Educational endeavours of centres located worldwide to take care of the welfare of these children, Dr. Homoud said such facilities were truly serving the humanity.

IIMSAM reiterated its continuous support to the United Nations and its allied organizations for the fulfilment of their noble objectives and reaching their international children concerns.

Dr. Homoud showed his serious concerns on poverty, inadequate child protection systems; the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents is on the rise everywhere, despite having stringent laws and better coordination across the globe.

Terming the daily preventable death tolls of 25,000 children from diseases like diarrhoea, pneumonia, measles and malaria worldwide as genocide of entire humanity, the IIMSAM’s Goodwill Ambassador stressed to start a global movement to save children’s complete annihilation.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child addresses the rights of children and youth under the age of 18. It recognizes their basic human rights and gives them additional rights to protect them from harm. The Convention's 54 articles cover everything from a child's right to be free from exploitation, to the right to his or her own opinion and the right to education, health care, and economic opportunity.

A key objective of Universal Children's Day is to increase awareness of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Since its adoption by the United Nations, the Convention has been signed or ratified by more countries than any other international treaty. Over the past decade, the Convention has proven to be a valuable tool for promoting the rights of children everywhere around the world.
