Internship and Volunteer in Nepal

Hands for Help Nepal organizes internship and volunteering program during summer and Autumn 2009. Interested participant can apply throughout the year.

As a medical volunteer you will be working at the rural health post where most of the patients come from nearby village they are poor and deprived, can not access to hospital due to the poverty, lacks of transportation, superstition thinking etc. Community health posts provide only OPD service where all types of patient come to check their health. In the health post you have to assist local doctors and medical staff in the treatment of patients. Also, you may participate in such hospital programs such as vaccinating, checking patients, consulting to patients, nutrition, or treatment of minor injuries. Volunteers also may take a part in health camp, mobile clinic, visiting door-to-door program.You have to work 6 days a week, 3 to 4 hours a day. The office time starts at 10 AM and ends at 15 PM.

This program is ideal for medical students, doctors, nurses, paramedics, pharmacist, midwives, and other medical related individuals. We also have a special program for community health and epidemiology’s students and Pre-Med.

* Teaching English to  Buddhist Monasteries Monks
Volunteer will be teaching English Language to Buddhist Monks at the monasteries. There is no any specific curriculum for teaching that has been set up; volunteer will help them with focusing to enhance English speaking knowledge of monks. Most of the monks have communicative English language with moderate pronunciation and accent.

Most of the monks are between 10 to 16 years of age, depending on monasteries size it varies numbers of learner’s 15 to 70. Volunteers teach them 1 to 3 hours a day five days a week. The monasteries locations are situated in rural, urban and semi urban settings. We accept application for one week to three months and possibly extend more.

We accept volunteer through all discipline volunteer do not have to be native English speaking. But as an English Language Instructor they must have a basic knowledge about grammar. We also provide an intensive English Language Instructor Course from professional, experienced resource persons as per length of committed duration. Further more we provide materials such as audio, video cassettes books, flash cards, etc.

Orphanage Assistant
Orphanages are sadly a fact of life in Nepal. The high mortality rate for mothers during child birth, as well as the short life expectancy in general, leaves thousands of children without parents each year. Orphanages provide these kids with daily meals, a bed, and some hope.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Basically as a volunteer for orphanage you will be assisting deprived kids in their daily routine such as doing home work, teaching language, playing, dancing, telling stories etc. Sometimes volunteers will escort them to picnic, amusement park, swimming etc. If you would like to apply your own skill in sibling assisting them then you are welcome these sort of skill. Depending on orphanage home size there are 14 to 70 kids, aged 3 to 14 years who are orphanage, abandoned, exile from war, poor family background and parent are detained. Most of these unfortunate kids are marginalized from creative opportunities and their fundamental child rights. You will be working 3 to 4 hours a day, 6 days a week, and also the time could be managed as per your availability.

Teaching English in School
Depending on your interest and time availability apart from orphanage assistance you will be teaching at school. The age range of the students will vary, but generally fall between 6 to 16 years of age and have basic level of English you will teach for anywhere between 2 to 4 hours each day for six days a week (Saturday is the day off). This will vary from school to school. You will be encouraged to work with local teachers to develop new teaching practices and help with their conversational English to enable them to teach English in the future.
PROJECT LOCATIONS.
The Hands for Help Nepal offers locations in rural, urban and semi urban location in different parts of the country. Our urban placements are located in the major cities which are a transit point of the people from throughout Nepal. The urban placements are famous in terms of archeological structure as well as naturally beauty.

The urban locations' distance from Kathmandu
• Kathmandu: The capital city of Nepal with approx 4 million population.
• Pokhara: The second largest city, the major tourist destination, 200km .
• Chitwan: The lowland area, with Chitwan National Park, 185 Kilometer
• Dharan: The city of ex-Gurkhas, eastern part of Nepal.

Our rural projects are located in countryside in lowland, hill area and mountain. Most of the inhabitants are indigenous from tribal groups such as Sherpas, Tamangs, Gunrungs, Magar etc. These settings are treasures of natural beauty with rain forest, tranquil gorges and terraces and exhilarating world famous High Mountain.

The places distance from Kathmandu.
• Lamjung: 6 hours bus ride and 3 hours walk.
• Dhading: 4 hours bus ride
• Sindhupalchowk 3 hours drive and 2 hours walk
• Mustang: 7 hours bus ride then 3 days walk, possible to fly from
• Chitwan: 6 hour overland
• Kavre: 2 hours bus ride
• Kaski 7 hours bus ride and 1 hour walk
• Tanhun: 5 hour bus ride.

WHERE TO STAY?
Volunteer will be staying either with host family or in a hostel. Hostel is available in some urban locations. There is no option could be made apart form host family in rural locations. If volunteer prefer to live with host family whether they are working for urban location then that is arranged. Our host families are experienced in providing hospitable services to our volunteers. They have been involved in this job since or before our inception, the entire volunteer had wonderful time with host families. This is a good opportunities to observe unique culture and languages. There is at least a one family member who speaks English that help you to communicate with others.

WHAT TO EAT?
During placement you will have locally available foods such as Dal (lentil soup), bhaat (rice) and vegetable with tart flavor pickle two times a day, 8:30AM and 7:30 PM. There will be a snack in afternoon which you can expect beaten rice, puff corn and roasted Soybean etc. Sometimes host families may offer different items such as noodles, meat (if you are a non-vegetarian).

HOW MUCH IT COSTS?
We offer one of the most affordable program fees in this competitive and expensive time. Compared to many international and some local agencies, our fees our substantially lower. But we are committed to providing excellent, quality volunteer programs that efficiently use the amount we receive.

The program fee covers
1. Meal and accommodation (Nepali standard) with host family during placement and training.
2. Transportation (pick up and drop off to/from airport and placement)
3. Intensive training and orientation appropriate to the length of your stay
4. Stationeries during training and volunteering
5. Supervision
6. First day sight seeing in Kathmandu

The fee does not cover
1. Insurance (medical, travel, personal belongings)
2. Flight or land transportation from your country to Nepal
3. Personal expenses (ie. gift items, beverage, water bottle)
4. Trekking, rafting, other adventure activities
5. Visa renewal and obtaining
6. Other expenses in incidental cases
