Local Dumpster Rental Provider Explains the Growing Liability Concerns in Metro Detroit, Michigan

Dumpster Diving is not just something funny to joke about; it is more common than you think, and is can be very dangerous

Nov. 19, 2008 - PRLog -- Detroit, MI -- One person’s trash is another’s treasure; the broken chair can be repaired; the torn coat is better than none for someone who is homeless or otherwise less fortunate.   It is sad how many people are so desperate that they need to support themselves and their families by sifting through other people’s garbage.  According to Sherman Rogers, of All Waste Dumpster Rental Company, dumpster diving is becoming a very common activity in urban areas.

When Sherman Rogers was interviewed recently, he explained, “Most dumpster divers are harmless; they don’t mean any harm to anyone as they are just trying to provide for themselves and their families, without being forced to beg or steal.  My concern is the liability exposure of the companies who are renting the dumpsters.  Dumpsters should be locked at night, and they should have stickers on them warning people to keep out.  Dumpster divers usually do their thing at night, when it is difficult to see and be seen.  They can be cut on broken glass, or they can hurt themselves when the jump in and land on something that is protruding, like a board with nails, or something sharp.  If they are badly injured, the company renting the dumpster could be sued, even though he has done nothing wrong.”

Sherman explained how there are different classes of dumpster divers.  “I know how humorous this sounds, but I’m serious!  This is much more common than you think.  Some divers are actually looking for food!  They may not be able to afford to eat at your favorite restaurant, but they know when it is closing time, and they know what time the unused portions of food will be thrown out.  Some are collectors or artists; others are looking for broken or discarded items that they can repair for personal use or to sell or trade.  Believe it or not, some work in organized groups, teaming up when help is needed to carry the heavier items away.  Many collect items they do not need to trade them to others who do need them.”

“It is very important that all business be aware of the growing popularity of dumpster diving and that they lock their dumpsters at night and carry sufficient liability insurance in case someone becomes injured on their property,” Sherman concluded.

All Waste, LLC was started in 1998 by Sherman Rogers with a single Mack truck and 12 roll-off dumpsters.  Today Rogers runs an all-Mack fleet of 18 trucks and more than 1200 dumpsters.   http://thegarbageman.com/ provides dumpster rentals, roll-off containers and waste removal services in Macomb County, Shelby Township, Harrison, Lenox, Sterling Heights, Warren, Detroit, Troy and neighboring cities and communities in the Metro Detroit Michigan area.
