A native of Mexico, Osio-Brown draws inspiration from the vibrancy of the Mexican culture and use of color and contrast in their every day lives—infusing her work with intense texture, shape and contrasts. After moving to the United States at fourteen, Osio-Brown became fascinated with written languages, specifically ancient iconography and hieroglyphics. She found the gestures and contours of lettering especially captivating, motivating her to deepen her awareness of ancient languages and civilizations.
With a degree in Art History, Penélope Osio-Brown also draws her inspiration from modern art and American and European abstract expressionists. Osio-Brown appreciates the flexible nature of abstract art, which often transforms her ideas and vision throughout the process of creating a particular work.
Spheres turns these influences into a bold repetition of pressed circular molds on canvas with added visual appeal from crushed pumice, garnet, as well as Arabic and English newsprint.
In this body of artwork, Osio-Brown sees a unique expression and celebration of what it means to be human, saying, “The spheres represent the repetitive nature of DNA and the complexity of our physical and mental systems. Our feelings, goals and spheres of experience overlap even when we are separated by distance and culture.”
Osio-Brown continues, “Although each of these paintings is made with imprints that rise out of the canvas, I think you’ll find that the art also draws you in, inviting touch and interaction, perhaps even speaking to you in a whole different way.”
The Spheres exhibition will be shown at the Osio-Brown Studios Gallery at 549 Spring Road in Elmhurst, Illinois on Friday, December 5, 2008 and Saturday, December 6, 2008 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free and open to the general public. In addition to viewing the Spheres body of work, guests can enjoy hors d’oeuvres, wine and other refreshments while meeting and chatting with the artist.
Guests can also peruse and purchase art in the back room, including canvas, paper, figurative abstracts and giclee prints. In addition, ten percent of the proceeds from all artwork sold will go to the Saving Tiny Hearts Society, which raises money for “grossly under-funded, crucial, life-saving research of congenital heart defects (CHD), America’s #1 birth defect.”
Penélope Osio-Brown’s award-winning artwork can also be viewed at the Rustic Gallery in Chicago.
