York, PA -- What two things could motivate 17 grown professionals to wear whimsical pink costumes to the office?
Halloween and a good cause.
The staff of Marketing Works, an advertising, marketing, and public relations agency in York, Pennsylvania, decided last month to combine their annual office Halloween costume event with their ongoing interest in supporting breast cancer research.
"One of the core values of our agency is that we should participate actively in community service," says Tina Rudisill, President of Marketing Works. "Breast cancer is a concern that's close to us because, directly or indirectly, it has in some way touched most of our lives. Several of our clients are medical practices in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, so we're in touch daily with breast cancer issues on a professional level."
The concept behind the event originated with Passionately Pink for the Cure, a fundraising and awareness program started by the foundation Susan G. Komen for the Cure. According to the foundation's Web site (www.komen.org)
Groups participating in Passionately Pink for the Cure are asked to stage an awareness day event in which each participant makes a donation and wears pink to show solidarity. The foundation allocates 75 percent of donations to breast cancer research, and the remaining 25 percent to education, screening, and treatment.
To increase each participant's focus on the cause, the program encourages creative expression in choice of pink attire, favoring imaginative costumes over merely wearing everyday pink clothing or accessories. So the staff of Marketing Works found that the program was a perfect match for their annual office costume event.
One would expect a creative assortment of costumes from the staff of an advertising agency, and the employees of Marketing Works lived up to that expectation, arriving at the office in costumes that included a serving of cotton candy, a Pirate in Pink, and a human Whoopee Cushion (complete with the associated sound effects).
Rudisill made her appearance with an eerily authentic rendering of Governor Sarah Palin (R-Alaska), paired with Vice President of Operations Scott Bowman as Senator John McCain (R-Arizona).
The Passionately Pink for the Cure event at Marketing Works raised $250 for Komen for the Cure.
"As a marketing firm, our everyday work demands creativity. But we can't afford to forget how important it is to apply our creative energy to causes that have an effect well beyond the nine-to-five routine," says Rudisill. "When I look at the photo of our team in costume, I see a lot of pride. The fundraising side of Passionately Pink for the Cure is critical, but getting a group to focus intensely on creating an eye-catching expression of how much they care may have an even more enduring effect. I'd recommend this event to any group that shares a passion for seeing breast cancer eliminated as a killer in our society."
Being costume-centered, Passionately Pink for the Cure events are naturally well suited to October, in which both Halloween and Breast Cancer Awareness Month fall. However, the events are not expressly tied to October and can be held any time of year. For more information about Passionately Pink for the Cure, please visit www.passionatelypink.org.
