The company has had an Environmental Policy for some time which included recycling the numerous boxes that the company’s products arrived at the warehouse in but decided to go one step further and re-use these boxes directly.
Speaking from the company’s East Yorkshire headquarters Monkeyshine’
So far customer support has been very strong with 75% of customers happy to accept the recycled shipping option and that figure is rising every day.
‘We have been overwhelmed by the support of our customers’ said Mr Clay ‘Support has been so strong that we are now recycling boxes from neighbouring companies in order to keep up with demand!’
Mr Clay firmly believes that small initiatives like this can make a difference on a larger scale. ‘At the end of the day we’re not claiming our actions alone will make a huge difference but it’s all about education and momentum. If we are able to change peoples attitudes about our throw away society it opens their eyes to environmental issues and hopefully sows the seeds for change on a much grander scale’.
He was also keen to stress the environmental benefits of e-commerce. ‘Our business allows customers to shop without the need for a wasteful shop network that requires a carbon heavy distribution fleet to keep them all supplied, the customer does not have to use a car to reach us and our energy efficient shipping network ensures that their item arrives with the minimum environmental impact.’
It is certainly true that waste is becoming a political hot topic with parties of all political persuasions keen to demonstrate their green credentials and major retailers such as Tesco keen to advertise new ‘green’ initiatives.
‘I firmly believe that unnecessary waste will become socially unacceptable within the next 10 years’ continued Mr Clay ‘and that our grandchildren will look back in horror at the decadence and stupidity of their grandparents disposable society.’
For the time being it’s clear that the issue of packaging and waste within the retail sector is likely to become the focus of much debate.
