From Rhythm And Blues To Bishop Joe Simon

PR Log (Press Release) – Nov 14, 2008 – It is 2008 and some twenty-two years since soul singer Joe Simon finally and firmly closed the door on rhythm & blues - a genre he now says he always hated - and returned to his roots in the church.  In that time, he has moved from being the Reverend Simon, an associate minister of the Cathedral Of Joy Church in the Chicago suburb of Flossmoor, Illinois, to Bishop Joe Simon, with a roving ministry and the official spiritual adviser for the World Conference of Mayors Inc., an international group of mayors from the USA, Africa, the Caribbean and the Orient.  In July this year, he brought his own brand of gospel preaching to the Porretta Soul Festival in Italy where, while fans might not have got to hear such classics as ‘The Chokin’ Kind’ or ‘Drowning In The Sea Of Love’, they were nevertheless able to revel in the tones of that rich Joe Simon voice.  Subsequently speaking with ‘In The Basement’, Bishop Joe was happy to talk of his life past and present and allow us to update his story, which was looked at back in issue #13 but, at that time, without the benefit of his own words.
