Nov. 16, 2008 - PRLog -- Fernie Wanda has always suspected that just like her dad and mum, she will one day suffer from heriditary hair loss. With more than 20 million American women facing the same problem,  women still face a general lack of support from friends and family members who do not see their problem as a real issue. The day came for Wanda after the birth of her first child when she was just 29, and it is gradually becoming worse ever since.

Wanda said, "My husband joke about his own thinning hair. No one takes my problem seriously as they expect me to be able to laugh it off like some middle age men. They keep telling me it's nothing when my self esteem keep going lower and lower." Like any working woman, Wanda have an image to maintain and losing her have wreck havoc on her self confidence in the workplace as well as in public.

In the book 'The Truth About Women's Hair Loss', author Spencer David Kobren points out that just like Wanda's case, kind people around her may feel obligated to make her feel less self-conscious about her hair problems by telling her not to be paranoid, "no one is going to notice" or "it is not as bad as she think". However, the bottom line according to Kobren is, "If your hair bothers you, then it's worth addressing."

In the beginning when she first notices excess hair fall and apparent thinning of hair, Wanda have tried to switch hair styles and combing them in a different way to conceal her hair loss. Soon, she started using topical cream as well.

It is not uncommon for women like Wanda to experience temporary hair loss post pregnancy or after they stop taking oral contraceptive. This kind of shedding is known as telogen affluvium, where a high numbers of hair enter their resting phase simultaneously. Compared to alopecia hair thinning in women, these conditions, although potentially severe, will go away after a few months when the hair follicles enter their active growing phase again.

In Wanda's case, her hair loss problems continued to plague her, and she blamed it all on gene. "I do read about hair loss from time to time and in a way, I have even anticipated this to happen. What I learnt was that hair transplant is really the only permanent solution I can use if I don't want to keep applying creams for the rest of my life."

However, hair transplant for women is trickier than in men as women usually experience a general thinning on the entire head. Dr. Jerry Shapiro points out in the book 'Hair Loss - Principles of Diagnosis and Management of Alopecia', at least 30% of women with hair loss problems have significant thinning in the donor area and are therefore not good candidates for hair transplant. For the same reason, Wanda foresee a need to get one done while she still have the hair.

'The Hair Replacement Revolution' by James Harris and Emanuel Marritt explained that even though the transplant went on successfully, "if the donor area continues to thin, the transplanted hair will also thin over time, since it came from the same area." Besides, since the entire scalp experience some degree of thinning, there is just not enough donor hair to cover the whole area. Therefore, female hair transplant have to be carried out with selective transplantation in key areas.

The book also explained that getting an experienced female baldness surgeon "because the female hairline is characteristically irregular and often asymmetric, a good surgeon must fight his instincts to be orderly when determining the placement of the grafts." Apart from that, the surgery itself require more concentration as women, unlike men, usually have pre-existing hair in the recipient area.

Despite the fact that female hair transplant is more risky than male, women like Wanda are increasingly seeking hair replacement therapy. A major key to success here is choosing a surgeon who handles female clients regularly will ensure that he or she possess the knowledge, insight and artistic skill to produce the most natural and balanced hair transplant.
