The capital of Costa Rica is San Jose, the largest city of the country. It is situated in Gran Area Metropolitana, located in the Central Valley. Being the capital of the country, it is naturally the political, economic and transportation hub. The city was founded in 1738, although it was only in 1823 that it was named as the capital of Costa Rica. It consists of 11 districts, namely Catedral, El Carmen, Hatillo, Hospital, La Uruca, Mata Redonda, Merced, Pavas, San Francisco de Dos Ríos, San Sebastián and Zapote. Though it falls in the category of tropical rain forest, the climate is fairly moderate, but it can get cloudy and windy. The rainy season falls between April to November.
Today, San Jose is a popular destination among tourists due to its architecture and its commercial activities, not to mention it also houses the University of Costa Rica and the Juan Santamaria International Airport. The organization, Inter-American Court of Human Rights also has its headquarters here. Among other notable landmarks are the Banco Central de Costa Rica building, the Banco Nacional building, La Sabana Metropolitan Park and the Avenida Central.
These landmarks attract thousands of tourists each year, just like Ed Mercer, a Canadian tourist who came to see this visually stunning country along with his wife. Though Ed came to Costa Rica to view the Iron Man competition, this place won his heart over and he decided to settle down here. A man of many talents, Ed was a marketing guy and one of the best salesmen the industry had ever seen. Here, Ed decided to spread his wings and take on the real estate business. Along with his wife, Ed bought acres of breathtaking land and created a one stop shop for people who were interested in purchasing real estate in this country. Ed made the process of touring the properties, the financing and the purchase of a lot a breeze. Clients who have already bought from Ed are extremely satisfied with the services he and his team provide. The real estate boom helped Ed to create his own real estate empire and today he is one of the biggest real estate developers of the country. Ed came from humble beginnings but by the age of 27, he became a millionaire. However, a humanitarian at heart, Ed believes in giving back to society and make this world a better place. Ed makes sure that he donates a portion of all his sales toward the preservation of the biodiversity of this country. A true environmentalist, Ed has made astounding efforts to keep the endangered species of scarlet macaws, white faced monkeys and sea turtles from becoming extinct. For his great efforts, Ed was recently inducted into The Environmental Hall of Fame in June this year. Popularly known as Mr. Costa Rica for his unending devotion towards the betterment of society, Ed considers The Edward R. Mercer Foundation as his greatest achievement to date. Ed specifically created this organization to the conservation of education and ecology.
No one can forget Ed’s contribution towards beautifying this tropical island, which in turn attracts more and more tourists every year to Costa Rica. San Jose also boasts of the Central Park, the Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica, the Melico Salazar Theatre, the Cathedral and the Plaza de la Cultura. There are also a myriad of museums in San Jose which are visited daily by thousands of tourists and locals alike. Its collection of clubs, bars, restaurants and discos attract locals and tourist alike with its active night life. You will also find art galleries and shops where tourists can buy gifts and souvenirs to take back home. Coffee shops also form an integral part of this city where people can sit and enjoy this famous Costa Rican beverage. All in all, San Jose is one of the most exciting cities of Costa Rica which has something to offer everyone, be it art aficionados, tourists or the Ticos themselves.
