Follow on Google News | The Wine School's November Sommelier SmackdownsThe competition where one of the country's top wine professionals competes against one of The Wine School's instructors to create the perfect food and wine pairing. Zagat has called this event Philadelphia's "hot culinary competition".
By: The Wine School And, as is the rule, the budget is tight and competitors are not allowed to cull wine from their own personal cellars. You, the audience, taste each pairing and choose the winner. On Friday, November 14, from 7:30 – 9:30 PM, the Wine School welcomes Thom Cardwell – recently named Philanthropist of the Year by Philadelphia's City of Hope organization. Aside from his notable work in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community, Thom has written about food and wines for Philly Gay News, Visions Today, Taste Magazine, and most notably, Thom's Table. This should be a raucous night when Cardwell goes head to head with Keith Wallace over which wines to drink with exciting food pairings. And in the following week, on Wednesday, November 19, from 7:30 – 9:30, Brett Taylor will enter the fray. Taylor is the well-versed sommelier of Osteria – one of Philadelphia's highly acclaimed restaurants – and he readily took the challenge to go up against Brian Freedman, no pushover himself when it comes to pairing wines and food. Some of the finest sommeliers in the city, as well as other wine professionals, have made appearances at the school competing in The Wine School Sommelier Smackdowns, including sommeliers Christophe Tassan of Le Bec-Fin, Ryan Davis of Rae, Jeff Bloom of Oceanaire, Christophe Guillot of Brasserie Perrier; wine maker Eric Miller of Chaddsford Winery; author and Forbes lifestyle editor Eric Arnold (First Big Crush); and wine celebrity Gary Vaynerchuk, to name a few.
