Suffolk County Office of Minority Affairs Recognizes Dr. Santiago during Hispanic Heritage Month
Briarcliffe College President Dr. George Santiago, Jr. was recognized during Hispanic Heritage Month in ceremonies held October 24, 2008 by the Suffolk County Office of Minority Affairs in a themed presentation “Embracing Our Hispanic Role Models.”
The first in his family to earn a four-year college degree, George Santiago graduated from Rutgers College in 1983 and subsequently earned his M.Ed. and Ph.D from The Pennsylvania State University. He joined Briarcliffe College in 2004 and was appointed president in 2006. In his stewardship of the College, he has reached out to New York’s growing Hispanic population by partnering with organizations, including, among others, Adelante and 100 Hispanic Women, as well as forming the Briarcliffe College Hispanic Scholarship program.
According to Mel Guadalupe, director of the Suffolk County Office of Minority Affairs speaking on behalf of the Suffolk County Hispanic Advisory Board in presenting the award, “George Santiago exemplifies those qualities of leadership that are critical to guiding our young Hispanic students to advance their education and their futures.”
In his keynote address, George Santiago recalled his own mentors from various turns in life — a Boy Scout leader, a neighbor who became his tutor, a college professor. “Someone who takes an interest in our development is often the key to our success,” said Santiago. “It is an honor to be recognized for that which has informed my own progress.”
