With many planning policies now requiring the Lifetime Homes standard in new developments, ACO Building Drainage has introduced a range of products to its wetroom drainage portfolio that meet all the criteria of the standard.
Aimed at providing accessible and adaptable accommodation for people of all ages and physical ability and mobility, the Lifetime Homes standard — which imposes additional requirements beyond Part M of the Building Regulations — in that drainage for a future accessible shower, if not already installed, should be provided in all dwellings.
Comprising four products, the new range from ACO now gives developers a choice of drainage, all incorporating enhanced slip-resistance features. There are three gullies and a channel system to choose from. One gully allows drainage directly from a bath, but allows simple conversion to a wetroom at any time in the future. Another gully features a solid-sealed top, making it suitable where the future shower provision is in the WC, while the third is a shallow, non-trapped pumped gully.
The new channel system drains the perimeter of the wet area and provides for easy, level access wetroom facilities in refurbishment projects. Such projects typically require the entire floor area to be raised in order to achieve level access within the room, but the ACO approach simply slightly raises the floor within the shower area — saving considerably on the time and cost of installation.
Already a requirement in Wales and Northern Ireland, all public sector funded housing in England will have to be built to the Lifetime Homes standard by 2011, with a target of 2013 for all private sector dwellings set by the government in February this year.
