SEO guide for beginners - how to optimise your website part 1

Competition is fierce and you want your website to rank highly. The optimisation of your website can be a time consuming and costly business. Here are a few DIY tips to kick start your own optimisation campaign.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov 12, 2008 -
If you don't have the budget to out source an seo company to optimise your website there are a few things you can do yourself to improve your search engine position.

The search engines crawl the internet looking for relevant websites to search terms. The first port of call is to make sure your website contains the words you think people might search for. If you provide wedding invitations for example you will need your site to include the words 'wedding' 'invitations' and a combination of these words. Ensure these words are also included in the title of your website.

The next step is to make sure your website has been included in the search engine index you can do this by typing site:http://www.jjseo-solutions.co.uk into Google (replace my url with your own). If no results are displayed your website isn't in the index. To submit to the index go to Googles homepage submit url and type in your website address.

Lastly and most importantly you need to have sites linking to your website. This is how the search engines determine how important your site is. This takes time but will pay off. One way of creating a link is to contact companies which offer similar, complementary services to yourself, not competing sites. Ask them if they are interested in exchanging links. You may find if you contact ten, only one will respond and agree. This is worth persevering with. Do not enter into paid link schemes as these could potentially get your website banned altogether.
If you feel able to compose a press release, include your company url in link form and publish this on the internet. This is a guaranteed one way link. Try and make the content useful and interesting and you may find that others link to the release which will drive extra traffic to your site.

There are no short term fixes or ways to cheat your way to a high position. By doing things the right way your website position will improve.

This is the first of a number of seo help articles I will be releasing. The next will go into further detail to help newcomers to understand seo.
