The 2009 trends and even more design at Ambiente 2009 (Oct 29, 2008)

Inspiration and information to start the new business year

The highlights of Ambiente 2009 at a glance

A wide variety of shows, exhibitions and presentations will provide orientation and inspiration. Discussing the value of this unique spectrum of products for trade buyers, Nicolette Naumann, Vice President, Messe Frankfurt, emphasises that, "In a time when consumers have become more discerning and careful, it is very important for the trade to have the right sales arguments ready. And this means, in particular, a balanced selection of products distinguished by style, quality and distinctiveness. For the trade, the special events at the fair represent an excellent opportunity to obtain an overview of the most important trends, to discover new products and to gain inspiration. They make Ambiente an indispensible source of inspiration for a successful business year."

An overview of the highlights at Ambiente 2009:

Trends 2009
Galleria 1
'Feel grace', 'enjoy calm', 'stay essential' and 'think romantic' are the names of the decisive trends for the product worlds revolving around the subjects of enjoyment, gifts and furnishings. Messe Frankfurt commissioned international design consultants bora.herke to identify and stage the trends in four elaborate presentations showing not only next year's forms, colours, materials and themes but also a mix of products reflecting these trends. This is the second year that design consultants bora.herke have been responsible for the Trends at Ambiente and they have once again mastered the balancing act between a high design standards and practical value for the trade in terms of assortment compilation and decoration. A real reward for visitors interested in the latest trends are the 20-minute lectures in which Claudia Herke vividly explains and makes the trends comprehensible. Admission to the lectures is free of charge. The dates and times can be found at

Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany
Ceremony in the Forum, exhibition in the Foyer of Halls 5.1/6.1
Only winners can win this award because only products and personalities who have already won a design prize can be nominated for the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany. From these best of the best, a jury of experts selects the winners who will be honoured at a ceremony during Ambiente. The touring exhibition of this interdisciplinary award makes its debut at the fair, in the Foyer of Halls 5.1 and 6.1. The Design Award is the main measure for promoting design of the German Ministry for Economics and Technology and is organised on its behalf by the German Design Council (Rat für Formgebung).

Design Plus
Foyer of Halls 5.1/6.1
An outstanding award with a tradition that goes back much further than the recent trend towards design as a sales argument, Design Plus is presented to Ambiente exhibitors for new products dis¬tinguished by high quality design, utility value, technical, quality, ecological quality and a harmonious overall concept. For the last 27 years, Design Plus has stood for products that work better, are better made, are based on an extraordinary idea and, at the same time, are simply more attractive. The competition is organised by the 'Design and Life Initiative (Initiative Form und Leben). The winning products will be on show in an exhibition in the Foyer of Halls 5.1 and 6.1, as well as in the Design Plus catalogue.

Plagiarius
Foyer Hall 4.1
While one honours the good, the other pillories the bad. The Plagiarius team receives complaints about intellectual property theft from all branches of trade and industry. The most blatant copies are exposed at Ambiente and awarded the negative prize of a dwarf with a golden nose. The exhibition in the Foyer of Hall 4.1 shows the original products and their copies and always creates surprise and outrage among many visitors.

Talents
Hall 6.0
They come to Ambiente to demonstrate their abilities and innovativeness. Within the framework of the Talents promotional programme, international newcomers present their product ideas, concepts and prototypes for which they hope to find contacts in the industry. New at Ambiente 2009 is not only the increased number of stands in the elegant area – 28 instead of 20 – but also their location. With the expansion of the Loft product section, the Talents have moved to Hall 6.0 and, together with other highlights such as 'Next' and 'On Design' represent a genuine discovery zone for manufacturers, the trade and the media.

Next
Hall 6.0
They have already started on the path to success in their home markets and are now making presentations in the international setting of Ambiente. The self-marketers, manufactories and concept suppliers of the Next special area show striking products ranging from intelligent furniture to authentic self-indulgences. For dealers, Next is a treasure trove of new and unusual niche products from the design sector.

Japan Style
Hall 6.0
Successfully launched in 2008, the next Japan Style will be distinguished by a new concept showing perfect Asian design-art on a joint exhibition stand – an exciting project that provides a high-grade forum for modern, young Japanese design.

On Design
Hall 6.0
Design in theory and practice: at the On Design lecture area, international designers and design experts share their knowledge with trade visitors. The high-grade lectures cover subjects of particular interest to the contemporary design scene, including best-practice examples. An up-dated programme can be found on the internet at: www.ambiente.messefrankfurt.com

German Coffee Olympics
13 to 15 February, Room 'Europa'
Enjoyment on a professional plane: everyone from roasters to baristas compete at the Coffee Olympics to discover who can make the most of the aromatic bean. The competitions to be held at Ambiente 2009 are:
9th German Barista Championship
5th German Latte Art Contest
4th German Coffee & Spirit Competition
3rd German Roasting Championship
4th German Cup Tasting Contest

Asean Fusion
Hall 1.1
The Asean Fusion special area presents young, modern home furnishings – a symbiosis of traditional handicrafts production and contemporary design – from the Far East. The result is top design in a modern ethno look.

Product of the year
Galleria 0
Plastic Consumer Goods Association (pro-K Industrieverband Halbzeuge und Konsumprodukte aus Kunststoff e.V.)
The best in plastic: products entered for this competition must pass a strict examination before they can be chosen as 'Product of the Year'. A jury of experts selects the winners in four categories – home, leisure, general purpose and technical consumer goods – on the basis of functionality, design and creativity. The award-winning products are explained and displayed in an exhibition in the Galleria, level 0.

Elementi
Foyer of Hall 10.1
Silver from Italy is a blend of tradition, craftsmanship, design, technology, continuity and innovation. The special show of the Italian Silverware Association (Associazione Argentieri) presents the fascinating material in a highly charged mix with elements that captured the imagination of clergy and aristocracy back in the 19th century.
