NEW LONDON, N.H. -- Can anyone be a successful entrepreneur?
According to Dr. Matthew Kenney, President of Kenney Globalpreneurship™
, it depends on which definition of entrepreneurship you use. The original 18th Century definition from economist Richard Cantillon equates entrepreneurship with risk taking and self-employment. The 20th Century definition, put forth by economist Joseph Schumpeter in 1931 and the one used by most scholars, equates entrepreneurship with innovation but not necessarily self-employment.
According to Kenney, “From a scholarly perspective, everyone has the capacity to become more innovative and entrepreneurial. However, to suggest that anyone can launch a successful business diminishes the role natural talent has on the business creation process. Much like an artist who uses her talent to turn a blank canvas into a work of art, true entrepreneurs have a natural talent for seeing opportunities and possess the skills needed to pursue them.”
Leaders of economic development agencies and government leaders globally can stimulate more entrepreneurship and job creation within their communities by strategically identifying individuals with a propensity for entrepreneurial success. Kenney notes “The first steps in creating a vibrant entrepreneurial community are identifying and measuring the population segments with the most untapped entrepreneurial talent and interest in self-employment.”
The next steps, he continues, “Are to identify specific cultural issues that may be inhibiting business creation and develop strategies to mitigate them.”
Every community has individuals with natural entrepreneurial talent. However, there are often cultural variables that block some of that talent from blossoming. Kenney’Globalpreneurship™
offers a unique and valuable service to domestic and global economic development agencies because it is the only firm that studies exclusively the interaction between cultural variables and entrepreneurship. Essentially, showing economic development leaders where they should be directing their resources and what factors are currently preventing people from starting a business in their community.
