Steve Brown of Ozark Water Out drove five hours from Joplin, MO to offer his time and services to assist Extreme Makeover: Home Edition build a new home for the Martirez family. This episode will air Sunday, November 9, 2008 at 8E/ 7C on ABC.
Dawn Martirez was a beloved and dedicated pediatric cancer nurse who cared for terminally ill children all her life; little did she know that her medical experience would prepare her for the care of her own children. She and her husband Emmanuel had their daughter Elle, and then became pregnant again with twins Evan and Alec. Evan has an extremely rare genetic condition called 9P minus, and Alec has another uncommon genetic disorder known as Crouzon Syndrome. Even though the doctors warned of severe complications, Dawn refused to terminate the pregnancy. Both twins suffer from skeletal abnormalities that require extensive corrective facial and cranial surgeries, with Evan having physical handicaps and mental retardation, and Alec being profoundly hearing impaired. Dawn also had to stop working as a nurse in order to take care of the twins full time. As the boys get older, the home's cramped narrow hallways, steep stairs, crumbling driveway, and single, handicapped inaccessible bathroom are posing great problems for them and slowing their development. Now it is up to Ty and his designers to equip the Martirez’s home to accommodate the twins’ special needs.
Ty Pennington and the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition team are joined by builders, roofers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, painters, dry wall installers, designers, landscapers and countless other volunteers including Water Out drying contractors, to completely renovate the home, sometimes even knock it down and start over again, in just seven days. A project this size would normally take four months. All of the materials and services are donated.
The patented Water Out drying system uses heat to dry. Once the drywall is installed in the home the trailers are used to accelerate drying the mud and any other construction materials and reduce the amount of time between drywall installation and painting. The trailers have been used on several projects to dry frames which got wet due to weather and even for temporary heating over the past few seasons.
