Cheyney University Keystone Honors Academy students were recently involved in original research projects that integrated classroom material with applied learning experiences. Each student’s research was conducted while they were involved in summer research programs and their work was presented at the Cheyney University STEM Summer Internship Poster Presentation on October 20, 2008:
Martina Randall – Maternal, Child and Family Health
Place of internship: Thomas Jefferson University
Michele Thompson – Anatomical Analysis of Liana
Place of internship – Millersville University
Yaminah Watson – Investigation into the use of chemically modified solid-state sub-micropores for bimolecular assemblies.
Place of internship – Drexel University
The Keystone Honors Academy will support Yaminah Watson’s participation in a national conference to present her research. She will participate in the University of Wisconsin National Conference on Undergraduate Research which promotes undergraduate research scholarship done in partnership with faculty. She collaborated with Dr. Frank Hahn (Cheyney) and conducted her research at Drexel University during the summer of 2008. The conference will be held on April 16-18th, 2009 at University of Wisconsin in La Crosse La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Cheyney undergraduate student, Ezekiel Crenshaw, was also competitively selected to present his research as a poster at the Science and Energy Research Challenge (SERCh) Conference in Oak Ridge, TN on November 9-10, 2008. The title of his presentation is "The Purification of MBP Fused Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Proteins," and is the result of original research he engaged in while interning at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, NM this summer.
Student pursuit of original contributions within their disciplines places them amongst a competitive group of students at the national level, and provides them with the necessary experiences for placement in graduate programs and with professional employment within their chosen disciplines. The Honors Academy encourages participation in similar programs, and hosts a number of additional activities and events to help students prepare for graduate placement and for programs in law. Partially funded through the Bond-Hill Scholarship Program, the Honors Academy hosts activities such as graduate school visitations, graduate school fairs, support for preparatory courses for entrance examinations, and ongoing advising to assist in graduate school selection and application. As a result, the University has witnessed a significant increase in placement rates for graduates into graduate and professional programs.
