Two members of the Cheyney University Keystone Honors Academy were recently published in the Villanova Junior Law Review.  Melaniesha Abernathy and Khalif Brown published their works as the culmination of their academic experience at the Villanova Pre-Law for Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) Program during the summer of 2008.  Their memoranda were prepared under the tutelage of Libby White, Associate Professor of Legal Writing at Villanova School of Law.  Abernathy’s memorandum is entitled Peter Dressler – Charge of Recklessness Exception to Defense Duress to Homicide and Brown’s memorandum is entitled Richie/Relocation/Pennsylvania Law on Improvement of Quality of Life.  Held on the Villanova University campus, the PLUS Program provided undergraduate sophomores and juniors the opportunity to attend pre-law classes in legal writing and research, legal reasoning and logic and prepare for the LSAT.

A senior English major, Khalif Brown is from Philadelphia, and plans to go to law school in the fall of 2009.  A sophomore Social Relations major, Melaniesha Abernathy is from Easton, PA and also plans to pursue a career in law.  Enrichment programs provide an excellent avenue for students interested in pursuing placement in graduate programs.  Cheyney students in the Honors Academy participate in a number of programs every year, which provides valuable experience within their chosen fields.  During the summer of 2008, several students participated in the Widener Jurist Academy Legal Enrichment Program as well.

The Honors Academy encourages participation in similar programs, and hosts a number of additional activities and events to help students prepare for graduate placement and for programs in law.  Partially funded through the Bond-Hill Scholarship Program, the Honors Academy hosts activities such as graduate school visitations, graduate school fairs, support for preparatory courses for entrance examinations, and ongoing advising to assist in graduate school selection and application.  As a result, the University has witnessed a significant increase in placement rates for graduates into graduate and professional programs.
